Families in Shortland could save around $1,197 a year on petrol cost with the Albanese Government introducing the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard to save Australians money at the petrol pump and delivering long-term cost-of living relief.
Families in the US, UK and New Zealand spend significantly less every year on petrol right now than those in Australia because we don’t have a New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.
The Albanese Government’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard will push car makers to give Australian motorists more choices for new cars, utes and vans that have until now only been available to buyers in overseas markets.
“This means that a family in Shortland that drives around 15,057km a year would save around $1,197,” said local MP Pat Conroy.
“A standard operates in over 85% of the global car market and while they have been proposed in Australia for years, including by the former Government, they’ve never been implemented – and that is costing Australians.”
“This is the kind of thing the Albanese Government is doing to tackle the cost of living over the long term and keep more of your money in your pocket.”
The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard will only apply to new passenger and light commercial vehicles, not used or existing vehicles. They work by providing car companies with targets for average emissions per kilometre from new vehicles sold across their range.
The Standard will deliver more vehicles to Australia with the latest engine and design technologies to ensure lower fuel bills, meaning bigger savings at the petrol pump.
