LABOR WILL REVERSE MORRISON’S ABC CUTS TO SAVE REGIONAL JOBS

July 01, 2020

An Albanese Labor Government will reverse Scott Morrison’s $83.7 million cut to the ABC to save regional jobs, protect critical emergency broadcasting and support local news and content.

ABC emergency coverage saved lives during the summer bushfires and staff came off leave to ensure Australians were kept informed.

For years ABC Newcastle has been there for the Hunter when our region has been hit by natural disasters.

They also regularly provide emergency broadcasting assistance to other regions when they’re under threat, including the South Coast over summer.

Now 250 dedicated ABC staff face the sack as a result of Scott Morrison’s cuts.

Labor Leader Anthony Albanese made the announcement this week with Labor candidate for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain acknowledging locals who depended on the ABC’s life-saving information during this year’s horrific fire season.

The ABC has worked tirelessly to support regional communities across Australia, particularly through drought, bushfires and now coronavirus.

As the Member for Shortland, I would like to thank the hardworking ABC staff serving our region for their dedication.
