The Nationals Member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen has today joined the Deputy Premier John Barilaro and their federal Coalition colleagues in supporting nuclear energy in NSW.
Mr Johnsen specifically said that the Upper Hunter is a “good fit” for a small nuclear reactor.
Nuclear energy is banned in Australia and for good reason.
If there was ever an incident at a nuclear reactor in Australia, particularly one located in the Hunter, the damage to our community and the environment would be unthinkable.
In addition, it makes no sense for the Coalition on a state or federal level to be considering nuclear power stations.
Nuclear power would be around three times as expensive compared to renewable energy and storage.
I will never accept a nuclear power station being built in the Hunter and I will continue to fight against any proposal for one.
The Coalition needs to focus on clean and safe ways to combat the energy crisis.
