I am devastated by the prospect of there being more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2050.
That’s why Labor took a policy to the last election to ban lightweight, single use plastics and microbeads by 2021.
Labor has long recognised the need for a solution to the plastic crisis - we led the fight to tackle pollution and waste management when we were last in government and established the 10-year National Waste Policy and the Product Stewardship Act 2011.
Members of the Liberal National Commonwealth Government, which has now been in power for six years, cannot be allowed to pass the buck on this issue.
For too long, the Morrison Liberal government has left issues of recycling, plastics and waste to state and local government. But these are national issues, and it’s the responsibility of the Federal Government to fix the plastic pollution crisis.
Australians want action from government to help reduce waste and increase recycling.
Labor will continue to advocate strongly for plastic waste management and reduction and hold the Morrison Government to account.
