LABOR WELCOMES INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT IN LAKE MACQUARIE

Aug 4, 2017

The Member for Shortland, Pat Conroy MP has welcomed the Federal Government’s $2.2 million investment for the extension of Munibung Road, connecting Boolaroo and Cardiff in Lake Macquarie.

This funding would not have occurred and the project would not have proceeded without the $2.9 million committed earlier this year by the Lake Macquarie City Council and I applaud them for their vision.

“The 700m extension will improve travel times for residents and the economic benefits to surrounding businesses in addition to providing a vital link between Boolaroo and Cardiff,” Mr Conroy said.

“This is an upgrade that I have long been campaigning for and it’s a great win for our community.”

Mr Conroy also called on the Federal Government to agree to match Labor’s election funding commitment of the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange (LMTI).

“While the announcement today is great news, the LMTI is a long overdue investment in our region and the Coalition needs to commit to help fund the Pennant Street Bridge, that is section 2 of the LMTI.”

The last Federal Labor Government invested $13 million in the project and at the last election Labor committed a further $13 million to build the Pennant Street Bridge.

Independent studies have found that for every $1 of public money spent on the interchange, it will stimulate $94 of private sector investment, and create over 10,000 jobs.

The Munibung Road extension is designed to complement the LMTI and without a commitment to the Pennant Street Bridge the Munibung Road extension will not realise its full potential.
